An example of an E-commerce failure and its causes

IBM’s World Avenue Mall was probably launched too early, before online usage became sufficiently popular to justify IBM’s investment in that project. Merchants particpating in the World Avenue Mall also complained that IBM did not adequately promote the project. IBM claims it learned another valuable lesson from the project -- that IBM’s name alone is not sufficient to bring enough customer traffic to the site to make it a success. MCI’s 1-800 Music Now, which permitted both telephone and online ordering of CD’s, shut down in December 1996, only one year after it was launched.
That failure was attributed in the press to a variety of factors, including: (i) weakness in the music industry that year, leading to deep discounting by retailers; (ii) the site was not easy to use; consumers seemed to prefer ordering through traditional stores; and (iii) its prices were relatively high, compared once again to traditional stores. The pricing strategy is a very important aspect that either leads to complete failure or success. Anticipating the cash flow needs to be followed by a well planned and calculated strategy in order to achieve success.
Another,it is very important to identify the demands and need of the consumers as well as to understand the market and the needs of the consumers. So the inability to define clearly and to understand the market demand n the needs of the customer and their buying habits is another reason for failure.

An example of an E-commerce success and its causes

Amazon.com was launched in 1999, which is an e-commerce best known as the first online retailer of the Internet world. Amazon is presently ruling the Internet business with its best marketing techniques and expertise in relation to the market trends and demands of its customers. It is booming through out the world of e-business with its wide range of books related to a variety of subjects and topics, committing a major source of income as well as also succeeded in marinating brand names. It is the only website that contains altogether web books, business brands and retails on a single web-based business. Therefore, Amazon does not only leads to sale books but also offer a variety of electronic items as well as video, music, health and fitness, wireless cell phones, automobile, house holds, gifts, software, hardware, kitchen utensils and many more stuff. It therefore contains items related to all ages, all interests and all fields as well as all areas.
Amazon.com has immensely gained economic profit with recognition in e-commerce all over the world due to its strong organizational and effective team management strategies. But the most significant and distinguishing quality of Amazon.com is its customer relation management. Its effective customer relation policies and meeting the demands of its valuable customers are the key element that marks a distinction to its success from the other e-commerce companies. Furthermore, the efficiency in dealing the customers and making them a priority as providing exceptional customer services continuously focus on them, makes Amazon.com on top of all the other e-commerce companies.

How E-commerce can reduce cycle time, improve employees' empowerment and facilitate customer support

E-commerce can reduce cycle time because it processes all documents electronically and error-free, minimizing processing time and the number of staff required. With E-commerce, customers are able to place order and receive goods in a rapid time by eliminating the business process and intermediaries. On the other hand, E-commerce also reduces labour time in document and mail preparation, telephone calling, data entry, overtime and supervision. It also provides managers more accurate data and improves the analysis of pricing change in order to maximize product availability by recognition of demand trends well. The uses of extranet greatly reduce cycle time

E-commerce also improves employees’ empowerment by decentralization of decision making, the ability to take decision on customer. The company provides data, business tool and decision support to employees to perform business transaction better by using E-commerce. The authorization given to employees to enter private network of company, intranet will empower them because the employees feel proud and work confidence to being trusted by the company and being motivated. It is also a channel to enhance communication and collaboration among employees and management. This also improves sales force automation and personalization. The empowerment of employees will increase customer satisfaction and work efficiency.

Nowadays, E-commerce has become more and more important in managing customer relationship. E-commerce could improve customer relationship by delivering value and updating customer knowledge (new product updated and promotions). The extranet could enhance communication between customers and company. Customers are able to access unlimited information in extranet without human intervention and improve order fulfillment (reduce time to place order and provide efficiencies that reduce customers’ overall costs). The FAQ session in internet could solve customers’ frequent problems in order to increase customer satisfaction and trust. E-commerce plays a main role in facilitated customer support and CRM (Customer Relationship Management).

Identify and compare the revenue model for Google, Amazon.com and eBay

Google Inc. is an American public corporation. Its revenue model included Google Adwords, Google Adsense and Google Answers.

Google Adwords is a pay per click advertising program which is designed by Google to allow advertisers to present advertisements to the people who are looking for information related to what the advertiser offered. It is an online advertising payment model and the advertiser has to pay every time while his ad receives a click. Besides, Google launched the Google Publication Ads Program which allow advertisers distribute their ads for publication in magazines and chargeable.

Google Adsense is an ad serving program and allow website owners enroll in this program to enable text, image, and video advertisement on their sites. Google’s advertisers are required to pay Google a fee each time a user clicks on their ads displayed on Google Network members’ website.

Google Answers is an internet search and research service offered for a fee by Google. The researchers ask customers questions and offer a price for answer. After a question is answered, 25% of the payment will be charged by Google.

eBay.com is owned by eBay Inc. which is an American Internet company. It is an online auction and shopping website in which people could sell and buy good and service online. Its revenue included Listing Fees and Transaction Revenue. Sellers have to pay some fees to list a product in eBay.com and commission is received in each successful transaction. Besides, eBay also owns PayPal (online payment transaction system), Skype (internet communication software program), and Stubhub (online ticket scalper market).

Amazon.com, Inc. is an American electronic commerce company. It is one of the first major companies to sell goods online. The revenue model of Amazon.com is Distributor Model which means the intermediary takes ownership of the product to sell and earn the margin. For example, I purchase a product for $10.00 and resell it for $20.00, so the $10.00 is my margin before cost. Revenues of Amazon.com keep increasing due to product diversification (started from merely an online bookstore) and an international presence.

History and Evolution of E-Commerce

Here is a brief History Of E-Commerce...

  • 1992: J.H. Snider and Terra Ziporyn published Future Shop: How New Technologies Will Change the Way We Shop and What We Buy. St. Martin's Press. ISBN 0312063598.

  • 1994: Netscape released the Navigator browser in October under the code name Mozilla.

  • Pizza Hut offered pizza ordering on its Web page. The first online bank opened. Attempts to offer flower delivery and magazine subscriptions online. Adult materials were also commercially available, as were cars and bikes. Netscape 1.0 in late 1994 introduced SSL encryption that made transactions secure.
  • 1995: Jeff Bezos launched Amazon.com and the first commercial-free 24 hour, internet-only radio stations, Radio HK and NetRadio started broadcasting. Napster & Business.com

  • 2003: Amazon.com had its first year with a full year of profit.
As for the Evolution of E-Commerce....

  • People are saying that if you look at the evolution of Amazon.com, you can roughly see the evolution & future of e-commerce.
  • Rich Riley, vice president and general manager of Yahoo Small Business, said that the essence of the Internet is the establishment of a level playing field for communicating and collaborating. He also said "an important milestone in the evolution of e-commerce is the development of affordable, easy-to-use e-commerce solutions that have enabled hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs to transform their unique ideas into online successful businesses,"

Yahoo Small Business Website

  • An important milestone was order fulfillment technologies, including shipping, according to UPS Vice President for Customer Technology Jordan Colletta. He said that online buying is mainstream today as compared to a decade ago. This is because there is increased confidence in online order fulfillment, the security of personal data, and easier online return options. Another critical turning point is the evolution of the online payment process. By making the payment process easier, the shipping process has become easier and more visible. Once a shipment is en route, it's trackable at all points along its journey.

  • What does the future hold for E-Commerce? Some say we've only just begun. During the next 10 years we can anticipate to see more ease of use, even better technology, dramatically improved visibility as well as a wider array of solutions for both online buyers and merchants.
  • Nielsen//Netratings' Daugherty expects to see significant changes as wireless e-commerce grows."In 10 years, consumers ordering products online through their cell phones and PDAs will probably become commonplace. In-store pick up will allow consumers to place the order on their wireless device and get the product easily."
  • When consumers tap into broadband, on-demand services would gain greater momentum. For example, If you don't want to drive to the store to pick up your favorite artist's new album, and you don't want it mailed three days later, then you can order the content online instantly. Broadband and instant access is going to change the way we think about e-commerce.
